Impossible dreams evaluation guidelines.
- We produced the evaluation in class on the final day. If you missed that, heres a helping hand: Please use the words and sentence 'help' from the analysis work sheet (posted earlier) to be sure you are talking about the right stuff. This is VERY important with final grading.....Who or what has inspired you for this project? Consider designers, adverts, fellow students, films. Please evaluate and say why these people have affected you. What specifically has changed your work. Illustrate your answers.
- How have you used the research to develop this project? What campaigns did you think were most appropriate/useful, with reasons why?
- How did you generate ideas, what techniques did you use (group work, looking at books, brainstorms etc). Which techniques where effective and why?
- Which impossible dream did you choose and why? What concept did you use to sell this impossible dream? Why was it successful/wasn’t it successful?
- Was your photo shoot successful? (lighting/models/quality/location). Did the final images communicate your idea? Did it work within a poster format? Why?
- What colours, typefaces, images, drawings did you use within your three posters? Why did you use these? What tone/emotion did it create? How did it communicate to your target audience? Go through each poster separately and explain. Illustrate!
- How has Photoshop helped to create your posters? How did it develop final outcomes (consider scale, layout, colour, text, image)?
- What problems have you had to overcome technically and creatively. Please illustrate.
The Beggars Banquet evaluation guidelines.
Be sure to use the analysis worksheet and tick off the words that you use. If you stick to this you can't go far wrong. Be sure to illustrate your evaluation with relevant images from your sketchbook.

The Beggars Banquet Checklist
Research:
You should have completed all of the research from the Homework set for this project (see earlier blog post). This is your final major project so on top of this research you should have at least 3 of your own self initiated pieces of research, analysed with the words from the Analysis work sheet. Be sure to make comparisons between your work and a designers work.
Mood boards and found visuals:
You should have 4-6 pages of mood boards and diverse inspiring imagery within your sketchbook.
Ideas:
You should have several very thorough brainstorms developing concepts fpr this project / strap line... tonnes of words across the pages of your brainstorms. I don't want just a few!
Sketches: You should have sketched out your best ideas into posters, made mock ups of your leaflets etc. These should be annotated with arrows and appropriate vocabulary being used.
Initial designs:
You should mock your initial designs up using google images or initial photographs yo may have taken.
Photo shoots:
You should complete one, ideally two photo shoots for this project, contact sheets printed and best photographs selected and printed larger.
Experimental imagery:
Using drawing, and various techniques and materials, experimental and imaginative visuals should be produced in development for posters etc.
Typography:
Imaginative type face research and development using computers and hand rendered techniques.
Branding:
You should have developed an interesting logo for the project. At least 20 sketches and then several variations developed and produced multiple times until a final logo is produced.
Final Poster / Final leaflet / Final guerilla advertising concept visualised. These should be presented in a very sophisticated way within sketchbooks. Printed on good paper, trimmed, or for the leaflets little pockets made in a sketchbooks if necessary. Not just pritt sticked in!
600 word evaluation.
This should fill a couple of sketchbooks, busy full pages all thoroughly annotated.
This project is the difference between getting the best grades for your final mark. There is lots of potential distinctions in the class so really push it. An hour each day will get it looking pretty amazing.

I
have selected this typeface because

Beggars Banquet work due for thursday
hey guys
This weeks Homework is to research and compare two guerilla adverts. I've seen all the ones on google search 'guerilla adverts' so dig deeper!
Answer the following Questions:
What is guerilla advertising?
What different techniques are used in the examples you have looked at?
How do they appeal to different target audiences?
Are they effective? Which one is most effective? Why?
Could these techniques be applied to the Beggars Banquet? How?
Due for Thursday.
Impossible dreams HW due for Thursday
Hey guys
Homework is to research 2 type posters and 2 creative type faces analyse answering the following questions.
See the following websites for some good examples:
www.handmadefont.com
http://www.typographicposters.com/
http://www.webdesignerdepot.com/2009/09/30-typography-posters-that-youve-probably-never-seen-before/
Answer the following questions within your analysis:
Who designed it?
Whats appealing about the typeface/poster? Colour / materials / scale / layout / letter-forms etc.
What is/could the typeface/poster be used for?
How could you use similar techniques within your own work.
Tuesday, March 4, 2014
Hey guys
This week you should be producing experimental collage in response to designers Hannah Hoch, Eduardo Recife and Martin O'neill. Lot's of you have already done this research so you should be producing a variety of responses, not just one - Study the illustrators work closely before jumping in.
Use photocopies of your gold card and photography
magazines
pens, pencils for lines and scribbles
coloured paper
textures
and anything else that will add interest to your pieces.
You will be using these within your mixed media poster so be sure they are advertising your Impossible Dream effectively and communicating the right message.
You probably noticed HW didn't upload to the blog last week (yay for you!) so i hope this week off has allowed you to catch up with all other HW's.
See you all Thursday!!

The Beggars Banquet Homework due for Tuesday
Graphics 2nd years:
Hey guys - You should have a poster finished for the first Monday back including your own photo shoot and visuals and type. We are just over half way through the project now so need to be sure this is done. You should have 1 soft back sketchbook complete by now. Having an outcome without the sketchbook work to back it up counts for very little - I need to see all development and how you got there.
Over the half term you should research 10 varying logos that could inspire your own. Annotate the found logos explaining why they are effective. Produce 10 varying logo ideas of your own and draw in detail your final logo ready to produce on illustrator on your first day back.
There will be a halfway assessment on the first Thursday back where i will be assessing where you are at and sending images of work to The Beggars Banquet so they can also get an idea of where you are individually and start getting an idea of potential winners.
See you soon!!

IMPOSSIBLE DRAEMS - Homework for Monday
Cut one gold card print of one of your photographs of cut text into the gold card. This should take a good amount of time, focus on detail within the piece. This could be used within your mixed media piece so really think about what image you are using.
Also research Eduardo Recife or Martin O'neill and respond to their work using your own visuals but their style. This again could be used within your final poster.
ARCHITECTURE PROJECT - due Wednesday 26th
Hey guys,
Well done for picking it up at the end of this project. You responded to our moans like professionals and have some excellent work... You just need to finish off effectively to make it really great and bag the top marks.
See previous post for halfway checklist.
Following that you should have designed, developed and produced a final outcome. This should include:
- Design sketches/ideas
- At least 3 pieces of research into relevant designers/artists for you.
- Responses to research.
-Development of visuals working towards your outcome. This should be exploring various materials and techniques and should be rich with experiments and imaginative visuals. (15 pages).
- One well resolved and accomplished outcome presented professionally.
Your evaluation should be word-processed and be between 500 & 800 words in length. Please discuss anything you feel was significant to your work in this project, but ensure you cover the following points:
· Describe how you gathered source imagery for the project, how successful were your drawings and photos? What did you see in your images that you thought had potential for development into substantial 2D or 3D work.
· How did you go about developing your imagery? What techniques and materials did you use? How successful were these experiments? Did your printmaking and collage work help you to reach your final outcomes?
· Describe your outcome, discuss their formal elements such as composition, technique, use of colour and format, layout etc. Do you consider your outcome successful? Discuss its strengths and weaknesses.
· What Architects and Artists work did you research during the project? Were any of these particularly helpful in providing ideas/inspiration for your own work? Identify the aspects of Artists/Architects work that you found helpful or interesting.
· How well do you think you worked in this project overall? Did you manage your time effectively? Suggest improvements you might have made to your approach. Did you enjoy the project, if not suggest changes that might have made the project more enjoyable.
Including photos of your final piece in your book alongside your evaluation is helpful.

ARCHITECTURE WORK
Now You've had the London trip you should all have the imagery you need to really accelerate with your projects. The remainder of this week and next week should be spent developing responses to your London imagery and planning your final piece. The final 2 weeks of the project should be dedicated to the production of your chosen project outcome.
From your London photos you should be making drawings, prints, collages and starting to combine media to create multi layered images. This may involve using techiques such as PhotoShop, acetate collage, spray stencils, carbon printing, painting and the inclusion of text elements.
As a guide you should have the following (as a minimum) in your sketchbook by Monday 3rd February:
Pre trip work:
- Selection of your best photos from the College architecture.
- Research into 2 modern Architects (see the brief for names).
- 1 or more sustained full page pencil tonal drawings based on your College photos.
- 1 or more controlled linear (fineliner/biro) drawings based on your College photos.
- At least 2 additional drawings exploring alternative media/technique - these could be faster more expressive pieces.
- 1 good Gold Card print from your College photos.
- At least one Collage/mixed media piece developed from your College imagery.
- Brainstorms and moodboards on London.
- Selection of your best photos from the London Trip.
- Research into 2 Artists/Designers whose work is inspired or influenced by Architecture (see the brief for names). If you know what you are planning for your final piece then try to find at least one practitioner whose work has a clear relationship to your intentions - so if you are planning a sculptural garment look at a Fashion Designer/collection that extends the body through structural garments.
- A sustained full page pencil tonal drawings based on your London photos.
- And/or a controlled linear (fineliner/biro) drawing.
- At least 2 additional drawings exploring alternative media/technique - these could be faster more expressive pieces.
- 1 or more good Gold Card print from your London photos.
- At least 1 sustained and successful piece of monoprinting
- At least 2 Collage/mixed media pieces developed from your London imagery.
- Paper building made ready to be photographed.
- Photoshop experiments using your photography.
- Other experiments e.g. Carbon prints, spray stencils, painting - ideally these approaches should be combined to create multi-layered images.
- Visual planning and notes that outline your intentions for your project outcome (this might be combined with your experiments in the bullet point above). The nature of this planning might be very different from person to person, it could take the form of Fashion Drawings, experiments with 3D media, storyboards for animation or many other things.
